Double Knit Scarves

Knitting is a vibrant art form prevalent throughout much of South America. Brought from

Spain

during the 16^th century, knitting found favor with the Peruvian people; unlike weaving, hand knitting does not require a loom or other large equipment – just two knitting needles. For this reason, knitting remains a valuable technique for Peruvian families and artisans.

Today, knitting in Peru is widely practiced by both sexes, although men remain the primary knitters while women work dying skeins of yarn.

Our handmade alpaca scarves are knitted in a variety of vibrant, hand dyed colors. They are the perfect length for staying warm. Wrapped around the neck once gives you a cozy look and keeps you unbelievably warm. Bundling up has never been this much fun!

Vintage Guatemalan Huipil Bags

Huipil (Wee-peel) is the Spanish term for the traditional blouse worn by indigenous Mayan women in parts of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and western Honduras. It is the most significant part of her costume, and the elaborate, hand-worked design may identify a woman's village, social and marital status, religious background, wealth and individual personality.

Made from two or three woven panels and joined together with decorative stitching, a well-woven huipil can last 20 to 30 years before it is sold at market and starts a second life as an Alpaca Connection handbag. Since these items are created from many different blouses and skirts, each bag is a one-of-a-kind piece!
